What is saffron?
Saffron is made from the thin reddish threads, or stigmas, of the crocus sativus flower, also known as the saffron crocus. Each flower produces three stigmas, which are harvested to create saffron, commonly used in cooking and health products. The crocus sativus is a beautiful flower with six petals and three delicate saffron stigmas inside. These stigmas are carefully collected and dried to produce saffron. When buying saffron, you’ll find thin dried strands in a packet or jar. The container may not be full, but you should be able to see the strands, which helps indicate the quality.
Where is saffron grown?
Saffron can be grown almost anywhere, but it's commonly cultivated in Iran, Spain, Greece, New Zealand, and India. It’s also grown in parts of England, where it was introduced in the 1300s. In Essex, the town of Chipping Walden became so known for saffron that it was renamed Saffron Walden.
